New content available for download at Kiwix
- FreeCodeCamp (JavaScript). Learn to code the most hated language that everyone needs. If Perl or Python are more your thing, know that we are looking for sponsors to scrape all of FCC (10,700+ tutorials in a bunch of languages) and hope to deliver before year end. LINK
- Python Enhancement Proposals: If you are a developer, see what’s coming your way. If you speak French, you might want to learn Python first via Neuchatel University’s Youtube class. PEP, NEUCHATEL
- GrimGrains recipes. A website of homemade recipes. They do look tasty. LINK
- Tom Lehrer’s songs: A popular singer-songwriter from the 1950s and 60s, Lehrer retired from showbiz to teach maths and upon his death gave away all his creations to the public domain. I recommend checking his bio on Wikipedia, interesting chap. LINK, WIKI
- Noted.lol: Self-describes as «Everything about Home Lab, Self Hosting, Security, and all things Open Source». And Yes, there’s a .lol TLD, which is kinda weird as the site itself is pretty serious. LINK
Links will take you to the online library where you can download the zim files, but you can download the zim files from your within favourite Kiwix app.
You are always welcome (even encouraged!) to ask for a website to be made available offline, in any language. Just open a zim request (just make sure it is under a free/public domain license before you do) : LINK
Kiwix is free for you, not for us
- Free software is both Free as in Beer (you don’t pay for it, never will), and Free as in Speech (code is fully open-source and you can do whatever you want with it);
- We collect no personal data, and display no ads. Never will.
But running a non-profit org is not free. At all. We calculated last year that our server costs would be in the $18,000 range. The Mailpoet subscription for this newsletter alone is $90 per quarter. If you find this useful/interesting and would like it to go on we need at least some of you to pitch in. DONATE
Helping Preppers prepping
The downside of having an ever-expanding catalogue of content is that people don’t know what they need, or where to find it. This is even more true for our Imager service, where users can turn their Raspberry Pi into a handy, portable offline wi-fi hotspot.
The first piece of good news is that the imager now supports configs up to 1 TB. Yes, this means you can store a thousand GB’s worth of offline content on a single SD card. The other good news is that we curated a list of prepper-friendly content (medical content, food preparation, water treatment, etc.) and made it easy to purchase and download. LINK
Not us, but still cool
- Yes the internet is great but have you tried the outside world? Whataaabout will suggest activities depending on a set of criteria you can input. I got origami. LINK
- Can you explain any idea using the 1,000 most used words in English? If you like writing (or talking), it’s an interesting challenge. LINK
Ongoing work
- New releases: Kiwix-JS (the browser extension) is out! It will run on your favourite browser, no matter which it is, and is also ready for the next iteration of zimit files. CHROME, FIREFOX, EDGE
- We will be part of the Google Summer of Code this year. If you are a Computer Science student and need some challenge, we’ve got projects for you (and Google will pay for it). LINK
- Zimit 2.0 is now 71% complete (up from 53% last November). LINK
Thanks for reading! Feel free to to share your feedback for improvements. You can also subscribe to the newsletter directly by signing-up via the form on top of this page (or drop us a line to be added).
